Summitt returns to UT-Martin to unveil statues

MARTIN (AP) - Pat Summitt returned to her roots at the University of Tennessee at Martin to unveil statues honoring her and two other women who have helped influence women's basketball.

Summitt spoke briefly on Saturday at the campus for the unveiling of statues that honor Summitt, retired women's athletic director Bettye Giles and former coach Nadine Gearin.

The Jackson Sun reported that Summitt called her time as a player at UT-Martin the best thing that ever happened to her.

Summitt, whose 1,098 career wins are the most in NCAA men's or women's basketball history, retired from coaching in April after a 38-year tenure at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville that included eight national championships. She remains part of the staff as head coach emeritus.
