Lioness accesses forbidden area, zoo guests moved indoors

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A three-year-old lioness walked down a hallway she should not have been able to access and caused the Knoxville Zoo to take safety precautions on Sunday afternoon.

The African lioness, Zarina, went through an open door inside the Valley of the Kings building and made it to the hallway.

Knoxville Zoo officials said the lioness was double-contained inside the building with two barriers between her and all exits.

Zoo staff and veterinarians tranquilized Zarina and returned her to her den.

Due to safety protocol, zoo guests were moved indoors until staff could confirm everyone's safety.
