Fire displaces five families at Oak Ridge apartment complex

OAK RIDGE (WATE) - Five families were left without homes after an evening fire at an Oak Ridge apartment complex.

The Oak Ridge Fire Department responded to a fire at the Royce Garden Apartments Complex around 9:30 p.m. Thursday night.

The fire displaced five families totaling 14 people - six adults and eight children.

Officials arrived at the scene to find the third-story apartment filled with smoke.

Firefighters extinguished the fire, which was concentrated on the stove and had been contained by the building's sprinkler system.

The fire was determined to be accidental.

There were no injuries reported.

The American Red Cross was called to the scene and provided standard lodging and meal assistance to the displaced families for the next two days.

According to Red Cross spokesperson Diane Naus, two of the apartments were completely destroyed and the families will not be able to move back in.

Most of the residents were able to return to their apartments.
