JEFFERSON CITY (WATE) - A woman was shot late Sunday night in a rural area of Jefferson County

Jefferson County sheriff's deputies say the woman was shot as many as three times in the vicinity of Coile Road near Jefferson City just before 11:00 p.m.

Jefferson County Sheriff Bud McCoig identified the woman as 24-year-old Whitney Baxter, of Knoxville.

After being shot the woman ran down the road for help. She stopped at the first house she saw, where the resident rushed to help.

"She came to the door, and my wife was with me, and [the woman] said 'I've been shot,'" said Bill Gann. "I called 911 and the police came, and, Lord, she was bleeding bad. I was just afraid she was going to die on my doorstep."

The woman was flown to a hospital. There is no word yet on her condition.

The investigation is ongoing.
