MARYVILLE (WATE) - A small plane crashed in Blount County Tuesday morning.

A small, 4-seat Cessna crashed down on the property of the Smoky Mountain Speedway off of Brick Mill Road, east of Greenback.

Blount County dispatchers said they received the call around 11:20 a.m.

The two men onboard the aircraft, a Cessna Model 182, were not injured, and were out of the airplane when deputies arrived on the scene.

The pilot, Nicholas Lyons, 33, of Centralia, Illinois, told deputies that upon landing the airplane in a field behind the racetrack, he was unable to get the aircraft stopped.

Lyons said the airplane was not able to gain altitude, ran into a chain link fence and flipped over on its top.

He and his passenger, Nicholas Gieseking, 29, of Highland, Illinois, were in Maryville to test drive a vehicle at the speedway.

An investigator with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is scheduled to arrive Wednesday to conduct an investigation.
