Pittman Center man dies on The Spur


GATLINBURG (WATE) - A Pittman Center man died just before midnight Saturday in a car accident on The Spur.

According to officials with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Joseph Madden, 34, of Pittman Center, TN, may have been attempting to cross the northbound lanes from Westgate when another vehicle collided with his pickup.

Madden was transported to Leconte Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The other driver, Nicholas Swaggerty, 19, of Kodak, TN, and two passengers, an 18-year-old male and a 17-year-old female, were also injured in the accident.

One of the occupants was extricated from the vehicle.

Lifestar airlifted the two passengers to the University of Tennessee Medical Center.

Swaggerty was transported to UT Medical Center by a personal vehicle.

All three have since been released.

Park Rangers are continuing to investigate the cause of the accident.
