ALCOA (WATE) - An Alcoa boy's service dog is back home after being treated at a local vet.
The happy reunion between Lucas Hembree and Juno took place Tuesday night.
Lucas, 5, has a rare genetic disorder called Sanfilippo Syndrome. He needs Juno by his side. Over the weekend the dog became violently ill and was rushed to the vet.
Because the Hembrees are already struggling with Lucas' medical bills, the Blount County SPCA stepped in to raise money to treat Juno. East Tennesseans have opened their hearts and wallets. So far, over 150 people have donated and nearly $5,000 has been raised.
His mother, Jennifer Hembree, is grateful for all the support and to be a family again. "It was a homecoming, you would call, waiting to happen. Wish that it didn't happen so long, but I'm glad to have her back. Our family is complete again."
Lucas and his mom had a surprise in the works. Lucas's father didn't know Juno was coming home Tuesday until they showed up at the door.
The Blount County SPCA is still accepting donations on its website.
