Carson-Newman College to change name to University

JEFFERSON CITY (AP) - Carson-Newman College officials have begun the process of changing the school's name to Carson-Newman University.

The Morristown Citizen Tribune reports the decision follows months of study. School officials believe the new name will assist in recruiting students, particularly internationally.

Provost Kina Mallard told the paper many international students interpret "college" as referring to a high school or vocational school.

Carson-Newman has long offered master level programs, qualifying it as a university. It currently offers seven graduate degree programs.

The school's board of trustees voted Friday to change its charter with the state. The new name is expected to be official after the first of the year.

Carson-Newman was founded in 1851 as Mossy Creek Missionary Baptist Seminary. It went through several names before becoming Carson-Newman College in 1930.
