MORRISTOWN (WATE) - Officials at Esselte, an office supply manufacturer, said Tuesday its Morristown manufacturing facility will be closed by September 2013.

Distribution operations for Esselte will continue to operate in Morristown after the closure.

Company officials issued a news release Tuesday, but would not talk on camera.

They would not say how many people are likely to lose their jobs when the plant closes, but said the current work force is around 100.

Production is expected to be transferred to other Esselte facilities beginning in the first three months of 2013.

"Although this was a difficult decision, we believe it will assist us in gaining efficiencies required to achieve a more competitive position in a difficult market," the company said in its statement.

Morristown Area Chamber of Commerce President Marshall Ramsey says he was unaware the company was having problems.

"It's disappointing," said Ramsey. "We never want to lose jobs. We appreciate the jobs we do have, so it's always disappointing, I guess, and a little stressful to loose any jobs."

Ramsey is confident they will be able to rebound, and bring more industry into the county.

"We work closely with the state of Tennessee, with TVA, with consultants on identifying new prospects," said Ramsey.

For Esselte employees looking for new jobs, there are a lot of resources in the area to help.

"There's lot of jobs available in this county," said Donna Stansberry, with the Tennessee Career Center, "Probably, I haven't counted the pages. We have a job listing right up here."

Esselte has facilities worldwide and makes a wide variety of office products, including name brands Pendaflex, Rapid and Ampad.

Esselte officials say they plan to provide severance packages and outplacement services to help their employees with the transition.

According to the company's website, it manufactures products used for filing and in the workspace, such as binders, dividers, letter trays, magazine files, waste bins, and staplers.

The Morristown facility was acquired more than two years ago.
