MARYILLE (WATE) - A woman who suffered burns and smoke inhalation Tuesday morning in a house fire died Wednesday afternoon.

Shirley Ann Shields, 70, was trapped in her burning home at Old Knoxville Pike and Sevier Avenue.

Firefighters found Shields lying on the floor of a hallway when they entered the burning home.

She was taken first to UT Medical Center, and then transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville a few hours later, where she died.

Investigators say the are still looking into a cause of the fire, but foul play is not suspected. They are awaiting results from samples sent to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation lab in Nashville.
