West Knoxville Smoothie King fails for unwashed blenders

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A place you wouldn't expect to receive a bad health inspection report had one this week.

Throughout our area, fruit drink shops have sprung up everywhere.

The drink products are refreshing and nutritious, and you would expect the kitchen to be clean as a whistle.

But that wasn't the case at one West Knoxville smoothie shop.

The health department considers a grade below 70 as unsanitary.

Lowest score:

Smoothie King, 8515 Kingston Pike - Grade:55

To begin with, the inspector found blenders that were not being washed, rinsed, and sanitized. That finding itself could potentially make someone sick.

Cut strawberries and bananas were not at proper, safe temperatures. The reach-in cooler was at 51 degrees, but 41 and below is required.

The inspector said scoops were stored in dirty containers, he found a dirty ice cream cooler in use and there were fruit flies buzzing around the entire business.

The inspector also found expired juices in the front cooler and a dented can of pumpkin pie mix. The dent could potentially contaminate the contents.

And the inspector watched an employee touch dirty surfaces in the kitchen and then proceed to prepare food without washing her hands.

This Smoothie King is expected to be reinspected soon.
