SWEETWATER (WATE) - The City of Sweetwater is about to get a big boost to its economy and an added convenience.

City leaders broke ground Friday morning on a new Walmart Supercenter.

"It's great. It will be a great boost for Sweetwater. We've needed something like this for a long time," said Sweetwater resident Crystal Ragan.

"The economic development part will mean in excess of maybe a half-million dollars a year in sales tax," said Mayor Doyle Lowe. "We will have property tax. It's just going to be a big boost to our economy, not only for this year, but the next year."

The new Walmart Supercenter will sit just south of the intersection of Highway 11 and Highway 68.

In the past, residents had to make due with the few stores the city had to offer, forcing them to do their shopping elsewhere.

"It's great - we won't have to drive to Madisonville or Athens anymore," said Ragan. "It's really nice to have a better option than what we've had already."

It's not only expected to provide more options for shopping, but also more options for employment.

"Three hundred plus jobs," said Mayor Lowe. "Full and part-time. It will help some of the elderly or people that are retired to help with their income."

The new Walmart Supercenter has been in the works for some time now and the mayor has been feeling the pressure.

"You can't go to the grocery store. You can't go to church. You can't go anywhere without somebody coming up and saying 'When is Walmart coming?'," said Mayor Lowe. "I'm so happy that they can see this dirt moving going on now and they won't ask me that question anymore."

Now residents will just have to be patient a little longer, until Summer 2013 when construction will be complete. The mayor hopes the store will open by June or July.
