KARNS (WATE) - Firefighters in Karns will soon have a brand new fire station to call home.

The Karns Volunteer Fire Department's new station sits at the corner of Campbell Station Road and Hardin Valley Road in west Knox County.

It was originally slated to open in October, but because of some construction delays that date has now been pushed back to the end of December.

Construction began more than a year ago, and the department is anxious for opening day to arrive.

"When we did start to dig, we ran into a rock the size of a house," said Karns Volunteer Fire Chief Ken Marston. "That slowed us down about a month while we had that excavated, broken up and moved out."

Money raised from their membership program, where area residents pay a subscription fee to cover the cost of firefighting, covered the $1.8 million price tag.

The old station was far too small to support the department's needs.

The new Hardin Valley station is state of the art. It covers 8,800 square feet, and will have multiple offices, training rooms, dorm quarters and a gym.

It also has plenty of room for their multiple fire trucks, which they didn't have enough room for at the old station.

"This building is built for 50 to 70 years of use," Marston said. "It's built to withstand earthquakes, tornadoes and 150 mile per hour winds because if we're impacted by an emergency, we can't come out and help you with yours."

The new station is all about better protecting residents in the fast-growing area of Hardin Valley.

"We're getting there quicker. Fire won't have a chance to grow. Medical aid will be given quicker. We'll have more people on scene in the event of an emergency within eight to twelve minutes faster response time," said Marston.

If everything goes as planned, firefighters will be using the station in just a few weeks.

With money raised from the membership program, the department was also able to purchase a new fire engine, which is already in use.
