KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The Tennessee state high school football playoffs begin Friday night and the Central High Bobcats are one of the surprise participants.
The Bobcats are making their first postseason appearance since 2006.
"You talk about during the season building on success. Now we're in a position we've never been so hopefully our kids will come out and embrace that and kind of build upon that in the second season," head coach Joe Hassell said after practice on Monday.
Hassell took over the program last season, replacing longtime head coach Joel Helton. Hassell is a former assistant coach at Halls.
After going 3-7 in Hassell's first season, the Bobcats finished 6-4 this year, with a 6-2 district record.
"It's like a sigh of relief because it's finally something that we've been working for so long that it finally came to us. It feels like a weight has been lifted off our shoulders," said Bobcat receiver and defensive back Gavin Adams.
Here's the tough part.
The Bobcats received the No. 8 seed in Class 5A.
They face top-seeded Powell in their playoff opener. The Panthers won the regular season matchup 20-0.
