KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The Halloween screams at Austin-East Magnet High School on Wednesday had nothing to do with the spooky holiday.
School officials announced that students would be getting iPads, prompting cheers and screams from excited students.
Sophomore students in English 2 will get 160 tablets. Students will have their textbooks on their iPads and access to many literacy apps, in addition to other software.
Austin-East High School purchased the devices with funds from a state improvement grant.
The school has received the grant for the past two years and previously used those funds to buy laptops for freshman math students.
The school saw such big improvements in achievement, they received the grant again this year.
"I was wandering around like 'What is this for?' and they wouldn't tell us, and then they were like 'We get iPads'!" said excited student Shy'neisha Bell.
The State Department also approved an investment to install Wi-Fi in the school for internet access on the tablets.
