GATLINBURG (WATE) - After being closed for several days due to ice and snow, Highway 441 through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park reopened Wednesday afternoon.

A long line of cars slowly drove up to Newfound Gap, watching as the trees changed from brightly-colored to snow-covered.

"It is just so beautiful!" exclaimed Mary Ann Holland. "We don't get this kind of snow in South Carolina!"

The Bayer family from Illinois is used to the snow. They helped their daughter Summer, 5, build a snowman.

Others threw snowballs and tried to walk down trails that were covered in 17 inches of snow.

441 will remain open as long as it is safe to drive.
