CHATTANOOGA (WATE) - Chattanooga firefighters responded to a building collapse downtown on Thursday morning.

Neighbors told WTVC-TV in Chattanooga that they heard a large boom around 5:30 a.m. and the bricks began caving in a few hours later, around 8:00 a.m.

The building is abandoned, but search and rescue teams dug through the rubble to make sure no one was trapped.

Power was cut off to the entire block with crews digging into the concrete to cut off the gas.

Residents were being kept about a block away because firefighters said the building contained asbestos.

The cause of the collapse was not immediately known.
