KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A man was shot by a Knoxville police officer Thursday in the parking lot of West Town Mall.

The officer was called to the west side of the mall near Dillard's around 5:30 p.m. on the report of man beating a woman.

Brandon Sharp was leaving the mall when he thought he was witnessing a robbery as the car sped away.

"This Mercedes shot out in front of me with the door open, and there was a girl's feet hanging out of the door," Sharp said.

"I was just about to call 911, but before I could dial a police car pulled up in front and stopped," Sharp added.

Police then stopped the car.

"The gentleman got out of the vehicle, sort of acted like he just didn't care what was going on, he put his hands on top of his head," Sharp said. "They were screaming for him to get on the ground, he just started walking backwards towards the car, again they were screaming for him to get on the ground, he turned around and there was one shot fired from the police officer, and he dropped to the ground."

The suspect was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

The officer was not injured, but was taken to the hospital also as a precaution.

Police did not release many details about the female or her child, but officials said they were uninjured.

Knoxville police are still investigating the incident, but they said they do not think it was a robbery.

"It was a domestic situation with the male beating on the female again, the caller indicated the female was running from male, the attacker, that they also had a small child in the vehicle, and that some point he had pushed her or pulled her into the vehicle," Knoxville Police Department spokesman Darrell Debusk said.

Sharp said the entire incident was terrifying.

"I've never seen any one get shot before. It was traumatic, and I never would have thought it would happen here," Sharp said.
