KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Defending state champions Maryville, CAK and Greeneville all advanced in the state high school football playoffs on Friday night, while state title contenders Oak Ridge, Alcoa, Powell and Fulton also won.
In Class 6A, Maryville's 42-10 win over Hardin Valley sets up a showdown with Oak Ridge in round two. The Wildcats beat Science Hill 35-28 on a touchdown run by quarterback Rian Hall with just 20 seconds to play.
Also in 6A, Sevier County advanced to round two with a 27-14 win over Jefferson County. The Smoky Bears next play at Dobyns-Bennett. The Indians beat Bearden 35-7 in Kingsport on Friday night.
In Class 5A, Powell beat Central 33-7 and West defeated South-Doyle 27-7. The Panthers will host the Rebels in a second round game next week.
Morristown West also advanced in Class 5A with a narrow 31-29 win over Cherokee. The Trojans will host Tennessee High in round two.
