GEORGETOWN (WATE) – Investigators say a woman is fighting for her life after her son hit her on the head with a hammer several times in a bizarre attack at their Bradley Lane home.

Meigs County deputies say Jeron Smith, 22, may have also stabbed 50-year-old Karen Neal's brain with a fork.

Jerson is now in jail facing attempted murder and child endangerment charges.

Sheriff Jackie Melton says when he arrived at the crime scene he found Neal unconscious in a pool of blood. There was a hammer and a fork near her.

"I've been in law enforcement a long time, and this is the most disturbing scene I've seen," Sheriff Melton said.

The sheriff said it was an argument that started in the kitchen, and ended in the living room of the home.

"I think he committed the hammer part in the kitchen. She was probably dragged to the living room. There I would say he used the fork to stab," he explained.

We spoke to one neighbor who says while Jeron's mother Karen was warm and friendly, he always seemed a little off.

"He never talked to you. He'd walk up and down the street, but never talk. Sometimes I tried to talk to him, but he'd say one word and keep walking," said Charity Parris, who lives next door.

After the crime, they believe Smith, for whatever reason, handed a gun to his five-year-old nephew, who was also in the house. The scene was eventually discovered by Neal's husband, when he got home.

"Mr. Neal goes into the house, sees his wife laying there and becomes upset. He went out, got a gun and wounded Mr. Smith," Sheriff Melton said.

Despite the gunshot wound Smith took off. He was arrested about 20 minutes later. Neal is now fighting for her life at Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga.

Authorities don't know of any mental health problems that Smith had. It is highly likely he'll get some kind of court-ordered treatment for whatever he's dealing with.
