NASHVILLE (AP) - A redshirt freshman football player has collapsed during practice at Tennessee State University and later died.
The Tennessean reported William Wayne Jones III of Smyrna was taking part in a non-contact practice session Wednesday when he fell to the turf. Trainers found the 19-year-old player was unconscious and had no pulse. He was pronounced dead at 5:50 p.m. at Baptist Hospital.
Athletics director Teresa Phillips said TSU is devastated by Jones' sudden death and the university will do everything it can to support his family.
Coach Rod Reed said Jones had just caught a ball and was throwing it to defense backs coach Ed Sanders when he collapsed.
