Wendy's fails inspection for cook's uncovered sores

Food for Thought Reporter

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - An area fast food restaurant and a new place on the Cumberland Avenue strip have the lowest health inspection grades this week.

It's likely, we've all gone to work with a Band-Aid on an arm or hand.

Little cuts and nicks are inevitable. Once the bleeding has stopped, the Band-Aids keep the sore or cut clean.

But the health department has strict rules about covering open sores or cuts.

Lowest score:

Wendy's, 4407 Western Avenue - Grade: 60

A grade below 70 is considered unsanitary.

At this Wendy's, a cook working at the fryer had open sores on his arms and hands, a critical violation. Band-Aids are required.

Another cook using a spatula placed a burger on a bun. That's not a problem, but that same spatula had also been used to pick up raw beef. That is a problem because of the possibility of cross-contamination.

Another employee touched her dirty apron and then a hamburger bun without washing her hands.

At the drive-through line, some food was out of temperature.

When the inspector checked the dishwasher, there was no sanitizer running through it, so the dishes were not being properly cleaned.

Other low scores:

Whiskey Dix, 1912 Cumberland Avenue - Grade: 71

On the strip near the University of Tennessee, the restaurant's score is passing, but there are critical violations.

The inspector found a squadron of flying insects in the kitchen. Whiskey Dix's pest control company was ordered to visit.

The steam table was dirty, as was the kitchen floor.

When he looked, the inspector found no soap or towels at a hand sink, and soap was found stored with clean utensils, which is the wrong place.

Top scores:

  • Einstein Brothers Bagels, 1049 North Cedar Bluff Road - Grade: 99
  • Jubilee Banquet Facility, 6700 Jubilee Center Way - Grade: 98
  • O'Charley's, 8077 Kingston Pike - Grade: 97
  • Newks, 9261 Kingston Pike - Grade: 97
  • Calhoun's on Bearden Hill, 6515 Kingston Pike - Grade: 96
  • We're Cooking, 159 Peters Road - Grade: 96
  • Gondolier Italian Restaurant - 1063 North Cedar Bluff Road - Grade: 95
  • Mellow Mushroom, 2109 Cumberland Avenue - Grade: 95

At those high-scoring restaurants, management and staff are doing a great job to keep your food wholesome.
