ATHENS (WATE) - Three people were arrested in McMinn County on Tuesday as suspects in a home invasion and dating website scam.
Paul Bauserman-Randal told McMinn County deputies that on Monday, he had arranged to meet a woman on the dating website Plenty of Fish at the Kelly Mart on Highway 39E later that night.
He said he met the woman, who only identified herself as "Jesse V.", just before 8:00 p.m. and invited her to follow him back to the apartment he shares with his roommate.
"The complainant said he had noticed two black males hanging around the Kelly Mart," said Sheriff Joe Guy in a news release. "But did not connect them to the "Jesse V." We assume they got into the vehicle with her just prior to her following Mr. Randal."
Randal told deputies he and the woman went inside his apartment and sat down to talk, when the two other men came in the unlocked front door a few minutes later.
According to Randal, the two suspects assaulted both he and his roommate with a hand gun, and, along with the female suspect, repeatedly asked if they had any valuables in their home.
The three suspects took $260 in cash, a Frost pocket knife, a throwing knife, and a faux Rolex watch before leaving.
They drove away in a maroon Honda Elantra station wagon with luggage racks on top.
On Tuesday, a detective spotted a vehicle matching that description at the Jiffy at Clearwater Crossing in Athens.
The detective stopped the suspect vehicle and spoke with the driver, Jesse Vona Wedell, 21, and two passengers, one of whom was David Rodriguez Cruz, 19, of Athens.
Wedell was arrested on an outstanding warrant for violating probation in Hamilton County.
The two other suspects were taken into custody on suspicion of being involved in the home invasion.
Some of the items reported stolen in the home invasion were found inside the station wagon.
After further investigation, deputies determined that the third man in the group was Roderick Shawn Davis, 27, of Thomasville, Ga.
Davis was also questioned by detectives and additional evidence led to his arrest.
Wedell was placed under arrest on aggravated burglary charges, in addition to the Hamilton County warrant.
Davis and Rodriguez were arrested on charges of aggravated burglary.
Detectives said additional charges were likely to be filed.
All three suspects were booked into the McMinn County Jail.
