Blount County Animal Center sterilizes 1,000th animal

MARYVILLE (WATE) - Volunteers at the Blount County Animal Center spayed or neutered their 1,000th animal on Friday.

They said it is a huge step to helping control the domestic animal population locally.

While the milestone is a huge one, volunteers said it's only a drop in the bucket.

"If we adopted them out without spaying or neutering them, we would just be perpetuating the problem with animal overpopulation," said volunteer veterinarian Jeanette Drapo. "If you went out to our animal intake today, you would see the problem with people dropping off animals. There's just too many and there's not enough homes."
