Local group needs funds to place wreaths on veterans' graves

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Some East Tennessee volunteers say they need help keeping up with an annual tradition of honoring local veterans.

Wreaths Across America places wreaths at local veterans' cemeteries each Christmas, but the Knoxville chapter of the organization says they do not have enough money this year to cover the costs of the wreaths.

Volunteers say there are about 13,000 veterans' graves in the Knoxville area. But because money is tight, they are only able to cover some of the graves.

After receiving complaints that not all sites were cared for, volunteers are asking for the community's help.

"I want them to be seen, but it's just not possible. The economy is weighing hard on us, so we just do what we can do," said Deb McKay,  the Knoxville coordinator for Wreaths Across America. "Every year I struggle to get as many wreaths as I do. And I try to do is try to place them around Lyons View where you've got traffic coming from both directions."

To help the Knoxville branch of Wreaths Across America and sponsor a wreath, you can go to their website.
