Chattanooga Fire Dept. collects socks for Sandy victims

CHATTANOOGA (AP) - The Chattanooga Fire Department is collecting donations of new socks for New Jersey firefighters affected by Superstorm Sandy.

According to a news release from the department, the collection was the idea of Stephanie Steiman, a former New Jersey resident who now lives in Chattanooga.

She said she's collecting socks because they are cheap, nonperishable and easy to ship.

Members of the Toms River (N.J.) Fire Department confirmed to Chattanooga firefighters that they could indeed use socks. They said they are getting donations of food, water and even clothing, but people forget to include socks.

The Chattanooga Fire Department will have "Box of Sox" collection boxes through Nov. 30 at fire stations 1, 3, 17, 19 and 21 as well as the administration building.
