ROCKWOOD (WATE) - The driver of the van that crossed the median Friday and sent five people, including the driver, to the hospital has a police record in another county.

Oliver Butler has several charges pending against him in Roane County court.

He is scheduled to be in court in January on several misdemeanor charges including aggravated assault, harassment, domestic assault and failure to appear.

Butler was also charged with public intoxication, a misdemeanor, in 2001.

Charges are pending against Butler in Knox County after the recent accident.

According to police reports, Butler's van swerved into the median, striking it and becoming airborne before landing atop an SUV in opposing traffic.

The SUV was carrying a family of four from Kentucky.

Witnesses pulled Butler out of his van as it caught fire. They told police that when they did so, they smelled alcohol on his person and saw multiple beer cans in and outside of the car.
