DAYTON (AP) - Trial has begun in East Tennessee for state Rep. Jim Cobb, who was charged with assault over a dispute with a woman in a wheelchair during the Aug. 2 primary.
Wanda Goins told a court in Dayton on Tuesday that she was "scared to death" when Cobb began yelling at her outside a polling place. WRCB-TV reported that Goins became tearful on the witness stand.
Cobb, a three-term lawmaker from Spring City, has pleaded not guilty.
Goins was a supporter of Ron Travis, who defeated Cobb in the Republican primary by just over 100 votes. Goins said she feared the lawmaker was going to strike her.
Prosecution witness Dr. Derrick Martinelli testified by an Internet video connection and described Cobb as "aggressive" during the incident.
