KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Gunfire erupted at a Knoxville apartment complex Tuesday night during an apparent drug deal gone bad. One man was sent to the hospital while one or more suspects remain on the run.

Police say the shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. at the Montgomery Village Housing Development on Cook Drive.

When officers arrived they found Brandon Creswell, 24, with a gunshot wound to his shoulder. Creswell was taken to UT Medical Center for treatment and later released.

Investigators say Creswell told them he had bought illegal drugs from the suspects and thought he had been shorted in the transaction.

The shootout happened after Creswell called the suspects and demanded they bring him the rest of his purchase.

The shooting started when the suspects arrived to meet Creswell.

Police say Creswell is not sure if he wants to press charges.

Police also say a stray bullet from the gunfight hit the window of a nearby apartment, but no one inside was hurt.
