KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Holiday travelers are taking advantage of lower gas prices, filling their tanks before they fill-up on Thanksgiving turkey.

"On my side of the town it was like $3.04, as high as $3.16. I decided to stop by on the way to Nashville to my daughter's house," said Linwood Smith.

Average prices in Knoxville climbed on Thanksgiving to $3.16, a two-cent increase from Wednesday. At plenty of stations around the area, though, gas is sitting at below $3.00.

Several stations along Cedar Bluff Road in West Knoxville had gas for $2.96 a gallon.

That low price was a fact noted by the Smith Family as they joined millions of travelers on the road this holiday weekend. With a three-hour drive ahead of them, Linwood Smith says gas below $3.00 is reason to give thanks.

"Absolutely and I'm excited!," exclaimed Smith.

Heather Shubert and her family were just going across town for their holiday meal.

"We're headed to Corryton to be with my aunt and uncle," Shubert said.

The Shuberts made a point to stop at the Weigels to fill up.

"We purposely stopped here on the way back through to get gas," she said.

The national average is $3.43, about 10 cents higher than Thanksgiving last year. But nationally, prices are about 22 cents lower than a month ago.

Many drivers said they are excited by the local prices.

"Gas under $3.00 is incredible right now," Shubert said.

"I was shocked to see below $3.00," said Harry Rollins as he headed into work for the day. "When I saw that and thought hmm, got to get some."

On one of the busiest travel weekends of the year, a little relief at the pump helps make the holiday that much more enjoyable.

"Just being able to enjoy Thanksgiving, be appreciative and thankful for what we've got," Smith said, thankfully holding a receipt for only $28.00.
