JOHNSON CITY (AP) - Trial is scheduled to begin Monday for a Johnson City man charged in the death of his 2-year-old son.
Police said toddler Jacob Mitchell found a loaded handgun and fatally shot himself nearly three years ago.
Christopher Mitchell, 29, faces charges of felony murder, aggravated child endangerment or neglect, tampering with evidence and identity theft.
The Johnson City Press reported Mitchell is serving a 15-year federal prison sentence after he was convicted of having a handgun as a felon.
Police said Mitchell called 911 and said his son shot himself with a gun that was inside a cabinet. Officers found Mitchell in his truck with the engine running and found the weapon on an outside electrical box at the motel where Mitchell had been living.
