KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A deadly crash involving a tractor-trailer early Tuesday closed eastbound traffic on Interstate 40 near the Asheville Highway exit.

Knoxville police officers said Daniel Coombes, 46, of Doswell, Virginia was driving his 2006 Honda Accord east on I-40 in the same direction as the truck.

Coombes' vehicle began hydroplaning and collided with the tractor trailer around 12:32 a.m.

The driver of the semi lost control, 24-year-old Kyle Whitlow, of Westmoreland, Tennessee, began to jack knife, slid off the right side of the roadway and flipped onto the driver's side.

A passenger riding in the truck's sleeper compartment, Aaron Wilkerson, 45, of Lafayette, Tennessee, was pronounced dead on the scene.

The truck driver and the Honda driver suffered only minor injuries, but both were taken to UT Medical Center as a precaution.

Knoxville police are continuing to investigate.
