PIGEON FORGE (WATE) - A Pigeon Forge man was hospitalized for a cut to his throat and several stab wounds after interrupting a burglary at his home on Monday night.

Toby Norton, 33, is recovering after five hours of surgery at the University of Tennessee Medical Center.

"It's the most pain I've ever been in my life," Norton said from his hospital bed. "It hurts every time I breathe."

He has stab wounds in his arms, back, stomach and chest. Worst of all, he believes the cut to his throat could have taken his life.

Norton said he came home late on Monday and found a burglar in his Forest Street home.

Police say the prowler suspect is Zachary Rattler, 18, of Cherokee, N.C.

Norton said Rattler pointed one of the hunting rifles in the house at him, ordering him inside.

"I don't know why I did it," Norton said. "I reached and grabbed the gun, pushed it away, and knocked him to the ground."

Norton then took that opportunity and called 911.

But the burglar pulled out new weapons.

"He had a box cutter in one hand, and a larger knife in the other hand," Norton said.

That's when the violent stabbing began.

"At that point I knew my throat was cut and I was dying," he said, recalling the horrific details.

The man then allegedly left the scene in Norton's car.

Police later located Rattler in Norton's vehicle and arrested him.

Rattler is charged with conspiracy to commit second degree murder, aggravated burglary, theft, theft of a motor vehicle and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Norton is expected to spend at least five days in the hospital recovering from his injuries.
