JOHNSON CITY (AP) - East Tennessee State University officials have fired the university's postal services manager for opening a package that was addressed to a student.
Through an open records request, the Johnson City Press reported Harvey Byerley opened a suspicious package that came into the campus post office Nov. 19 and then called campus police, who notified the First District Drug Task Force.
The school records do not show what was in the package or who it was addressed to. However the newspaper reported court documents show the mail supervisor at ETSU intercepted a package on that date addressed to Marcus Dubose and that the material inside was believed to be marijuana.
Dubose and his roommate, Sheldon Cooley, now face drug charges and both have been dropped from the ETSU men's basketball team.
