One person dead, others injured in Cocke County wreck

NEWPORT (WATE) - One person died and multiple people were injured in a car wreck on Interstate 40 eastbound in Cocke County on Saturday morning, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

It happened around 5:15 a.m. by mile marker 438.

THP said the crash occurred when Dan B. Williams, 39, of Newport, drove his SUV westbound in the eastbound lane.

The vehicle collided head-on with a van. Kristy Lynn Jones, 35, of Toledo, Ohio, was the driver of the van and was killed in the wreck. Williams was injured and taken to UT Medical Center.

The other passengers in the van were all injured: Ronald W. Boone, 36, of Oregon, Ohio; Rachel Jones, 11, of Oregon, Ohio; Aolani Boone, 1, of Oregon, Ohio; and Amanda Constner, 13, of Toledo, Ohio.

The THP report said that Williams had been drinking and possibly had drugs in his system. Criminal charges are pending.

All lanes were reopened by 10 a.m.
