JACKSON, Tenn. (AP) - A West Tennessee woman has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for her role in the killing of a Henderson police officer during an attempted supermarket holdup in 2009.
The Jackson Sun (http://bit.ly/QW4uqm ) reports a judge handed down the sentence Friday during a hearing for Cheryl Freeman Steward, who was charged with attempted robbery; knowingly using, carrying, brandishing and discharging a firearm; and making a false statement while buying a firearm.
Authorities said Steward falsely stated she was buying the weapon for herself but in actuality bought it for her husband, Ricky Lee Stewart III, a convicted felon who took a plea agreement in the killing of police Capt. Dennis Cagle and got life plus 10 years in prison.
Cagle's widow, Judy Cagle, said she supports the 20-year sentence.
