Maryville falls in 6A state title game

COOKEVILLE (AP) - Mark Dodson found an open lane to the right and rushed in for an overtime 2-point conversion, giving Whitehaven a 36-35 victory over Maryville in the Class 6A championship Saturday night.

It's the first championship for the Tigers (15-0).

Dodson's conversion followed his 1-yard TD run to cut the lead to 35-34. Dodson finished with 318 yards and five TDs on 34 carries.

The loss is the first for Maryville (14-1) since 2010, ending a streak of 43 straight wins, including over Whitehaven in last year's title game.

Maryville's Nick Myers threw a 14-yard TD pass to T.J. Kimble with 45 seconds remaining in regulation. After a successful 2-point conversion was negated for an ineligible receiver penalty, Miguel McNelly's .after kick tied it 28-all.

Whitehaven drove deep into Maryville territory on the ensuing drive, but Dodson was brought down short of the goal line, allowing the clock to expire.
