Knoxville firefighters extinguish apartment blaze

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Crews battled an apartment blaze Sunday morning in South Knoxville.

The fire started around 8:30 a.m. on the 1400 block of East Moody Avenue at the Southmont Apartments.

The Knoxville Fire Department said that the mother and her infant son got out safely, and no one was injured.

The mother woke up when she heard the smoke alarms going off.  She grabbed her baby and then saw that the kitchen was on fire.  She was able to quickly evacuate and call 911.

The fire originally blocked the stairwell so that other victims could not escape, but crews were able to push the blaze back far enough to make a safe pathway for people to evacuate.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire so that it did not spread to the other apartments.

At this time, 18 victims are temporarily being assisted by the American Red Cross.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
