DANDRIDGE (WATE) - A Jefferson County man was shot and killed by officers on Sunday night.
Dispatchers received a tip that a man needed to go to a mental hospital and that he was at his home on Lakeshore Drive in Dandridge.
As the responding officers got out of their vehicle, a 41-year-old man charged at them with a weapon in each hand.
Officers ordered the man to drop the weapons, but he continued to charge.
At that point, one officer opened fire and struck the man three times, killing him. The officers were not injured. That officer is on paid administrative leave, which is department policy in shootings involving officers.
The Jefferson County Sheriff says the officer did everything he was trained to do during incidents like this.
The sheriff says due to the ongoing investigation the identities of the man who was shot and the officer involved, have not been released.
Carol McKee has lived in the Mountain View subdivision for 12 years. She lives five houses down from where the officer involved shooting took place.
"We need to be more careful about who moves in next door I guess," said McKee.
She says it's a sad situation and she has sympathy for her neighbor's family and for the officer who shot him.
"The officers who had to shoot him, my heart goes out to them, that's very sad to have to take a life," said McKee.
The last time the department had an officer involved shooting was two years ago, the officer was cleared.
Kids are being terrorized in school, on the bus, even in their own homes by bullies. Teenagers committing suicides and juveniles committing adult crimes that could land them behind bars seem to be on the rise.More >>
