NEWPORT (WATE) - A Newport police officer has been fired for allegedly smuggling items in to inmates at the Cocke County Jail.

Sgt. Donna Harrison had been suspended since the middle of November amid a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation probe into contraband being brought into the jail.

Police Chief Maurice Shults says an internal investigation showed Harrison was delivering or dropping off tobacco, food, drinks and cash to inmates on work detail.

Harrison can appeal her termination.
