Source: Strong leading candidate at Tennessee

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Sources close to the situation told 6 Sports on Tuesday that Louisville's Charlie Strong has emerged as the top candidate to take over the Tennessee program.

Strong is currently in his 3rd season at Louisville where he has guided the Cardinals to a 10-2 record this season and a berth in the Sugar Bowl after Louisville tied for the Big East title.

Strong came to Louisville with fantastic credentials after leading Urban Meyer's national championship defenses at Florida in 2006 and 2008.

Strong has been considered a candidate for the Tennessee's opening since Derek Dooley was fired following the Vols season-ending loss at Vanderbilt. Strong has reportedly already been interviewed for the position.  A report he denied Sunday night.

Strong is well-acquainted with the SEC.

Along with his stint as Florida's defensive coordinator, Strong held the same position at South Carolina under Lou Holtz and even spent time on Steve Spurrier's Florida staff.

Strong is a graduate of Central Arkansas.
