Union County schools closed for illness

MAYNARDVILLE (WATE) - Union County Schools were closed Tuesday for illness.

School administrators chose to keep the school closed through Friday because of the number of sick students.

Many students in the district have come down with cases of flu, flu-like bug, strep and a stomach bug.

On Tuesday, school workers began the large task of disinfecting school buildings.

"We're doing a lot of washing of walls and furniture with Clorox, and we have these fog machines, we fog the classrooms, and it's still getting the best of us," said Union County Director of Schools Wayne Goforth.

Most of the affected students are from Union County High School, where at one point 180 students were absent, and Horace Maynard Middle School, where 132 students called in sick.

The school will reopen Monday, December 10.
