KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A gun was fired Tuesday as a Knoxville police officer was investigating the report of a stolen car in North Knoxville.

Police say the officer located the stolen Chevy Camaro Tuesday afternoon on Oglewood Avenue, but as the officer approached the car at least one shot was fired from inside the vehicle.

A man jumped out of the passenger side of the car and took off. The driver of the car, Kendrick Sanchez Rodgers, 29, was taken into custody.

Investigators say the two men were fighting in the car as the officer drove by and the gun may have gone off during the struggle.

Drugs and the gun were found at the scene.

The 2013 Camaro was found to be a stolen rental car. Rodgers has been charged with vehicle theft, possession of a Schedule VI drug (marijuana), and driving on a suspended license.

He is being held in the Knox County Detention Facility on a $22,000 bond.

Police say Rodgers told them he gave the other man a ride after meeting him earlier in the evening at a fast food restaurant.

Rodgers claims the man pulled a handgun and attempted to rob him. The gun went off when the two were struggling over the gun, which happened to be when the police officer drove by.

The gunshot went through the roof of the Camaro.

Police are still looking for the other man who fled on foot.
