LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WATE) - University of Louisville head football coach Charlie Strong declined an offer Wednesday to accept the same position at the University of Tennessee.
Strong said Thursday morning he was contacted by Tennessee on Friday and received a contract offer Tuesday, but "it never went back and forth."
In making his announcement to say at Louisville Strong cited his commitment to the community, fans and players.
"My enthusiasm and heart is with the University of Louisville," he said.
At Louisville Strong has a 24–15 (.615) record and the Cardinals will play Florida in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 2.
Strong's job experience includes several years in the Southeastern Conference. He was defensive coordinator at Florida for seven years and in held the same job at South Carolina for three years. He also served as wide receivers coach for one year at Ole Miss.
He also spent four seasons at Notre Dame as defensive line coach.
Strong's playing career was at Central Arkansas, where he was a three-time All-Conference selection in football and a two-time selection in track.
Strong and his wife Victoria have two daughters and a son.
