"Picture perfect" weather expected for Easter Sunday

Today’s forecast is just about “picture perfect”. We will see plenty of sunshine, light wind, low relative humidity values and highs right about where we should be for this time of year, so please enjoy it! The area of high pressure giving us this nice day will slowly drift eastward on Monday, but we should still see a lot of sunshine and temperatures in the low-mid 70s. It doesn’t last though as a cold front pushes into the area on Tuesday producing widespread showers and even a few thunder...More >>

TAZEWELL (WATE) - A Tazewell man was shot and killed Saturday during a dispute with another man.

According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Tazewell police received several 9-1-1 calls around 8:00 p.m. about an incident on Old Highway 25E in Tazewell at a trucking company.

There officers found Gary Butcher, 56, of Tazewell, with multiple gun shot wounds.

According to investigators, Butcher got into an argument with another man. The man got a gun from his car and shot Butcher. He died at the scene.

Larry Hazelett, 64, of New Tazewell, was charged by the TBI with one count of criminal homicide on Sunday for the crime.

Butcher's mother, 89-year-old Bessie Butcher, says she did not know Hazelett. She says right now she is just trying to process the news of her son's murder.

"I don't know how I felt," said Butcher. "Yesterday I couldn't get things straightened out. I know I was worried about it."

Butcher says Gary's 34-year-old son was present when his father was killed.

She said it has been several years since she last saw her son. She says recently he had been battling several demons.

"He used to do OK, but he had got to drinking and that's what I hated," said Butcher. "He knew I didn't like it."

Butcher says her son's body has been sent to Knoxville for an autopsy, and that they are in currently trying to figure out funeral arraignments.

"I know Gary didn't do what he was supposed to do," said Butcher. "I still loved him."

An employee at the trucking company declined to go on camera, but said neither man worked there.

Hazelett is being held at the Claiborne County Jail without bond. He is scheduled to be in court Tuesday.

The Tazewell Police Department and Claiborne County Sheriff's Office assisted with the investigation.
