KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Several people were injured Thursday morning after a van ran off an East Knox County road.

The accident happened just before 11 a.m. near the intersection of Strawberry Plains Pike and Regions Lane.

Knoxville police spokesman Darrell Debusk said a 2006 Chevy 15-passenger van wrecked when driver Julius Brown passed out behind the wheel due to a medical condition.

The van is owned by the Kirby Vacuum Company.

The front-seat passenger, Robert Greene, grabbed the wheel to avoid hitting any other vehicles and tried to stop the car, but it ran off the road and hit a tree.

Brown, Greene and four other passengers were taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment.

All passengers were expected to be released from the hospital later Thursday.

The driver would remain in the hospital for treatment for his medical condition.

All parties involved were wearing seat belts.
