Local psychologist explains how best to talk about tragedies with kids

Posted:

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - After a shooting at a Connecticut elementary school left more than 20 people dead, including many young children, a local psychologist talked to 6 News about how best to discuss the tragedy with children.

Dr. Joshua Williams, a clinical psychologist, said with young children, the best thing to do is wait for them to approach you with questions.

He says parents shouldn't bring up difficult stories like the shooting or force the issue upon them.

For older children and teens, he says it's good to discuss the ramifications of such an event and talk about what leads up to events like these.
