KNOXVILLE (WATE) - After a weekend filled with more cuddle time, parents sent their kids off to school Monday with the Connecticut elementary school shooting.

Parents who picked their kids up at Sarah Moore Greene Elementary School at the end of the school day said the shooting brought an added awareness of how the places we consider most safe aren't immune to tragedy.

Many said Friday's mass killing has made them a little more nervous and a little more aware of how fleeting life can be.

"When you embraced them, you embraced them a little longer, when you played with them, you played with them a little harder," said parent Rene Jones. "With so many mental problems and things going on, people with depression and all that stuff, it could happen to us. So it really hit home."

From giving their kids an extra hug to prayer to being a little extra aware of their surroundings, parents were coping with the tragedy in their own way.

"It made you want to love on your kids and grandkids a little more 'cause you never know when something like this will happen," said grandparent Joanne Buchanan. "I have a granddaughter that's 9 years old and it really makes me fearful. You kinda fear for them to go to school."
