ROCKVALE, Tenn. -
Rutherford County school officials said on Tuesday evening that a Rockvale Middle School student has been diagnosed with viral meningitis.
The school was notified by the child's parent earlier in the day.
According to officials, the student has not been at school since Friday and has not been hospitalized.
District spokesperson James Evans told Nashville's News 2 the school's principal, Fred Barlow, sent a message to all parents notifying them of the diagnosis.
Viral meningitis can be caused by viruses that settle into an area of the body, much like a cold virus.
Parents with questions or concerns are urged to contact the Rutherford County Health Services Department at 615-893-5812.
