NEWPORT (WATE) - Cocke County law enforcement is looking for the two men who robbed a local bank on Wednesday.

Sheriff Armando Fontes says two white males wearing black clothing entered the Tennessee State Bank in Newport brandishing an assault weapon around 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Authorities said the two men took an undisclosed amount of cash before being confronted by a Newport Police Officer.

Newport Police Chief Maurice Shults said the officer saw the robbery in progress and backed out of the bank and into the parking lot.

Upon leaving the bank, the suspects came out and held the officer at gunpoint. The men also demanded the officers' service weapon, which Shults said the officer surrendered.

"He did the right thing and backed out preventing a hostage situation. When he got outside he was overtaken by the long weapons. He was placed prone on the road in the parking lot. He did surrender his GLOCK .357 handgun issued by the department," Shults said.

According to the FBI, a short time later they fled the scene with an unknown amount of money in a silver GMC Acadia, heading north on Highway 321 and eventually on Interstate 40 toward North Carolina.

No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

If anyone has information on the robbery is urged to contact the FBI office in Knoxville or Johnson City or Newport Police Department at 423-623-5556, ext. 104.
